Who We Are
We are a non-profit organization. South by Southwest Jack Russell Terrier Rescue was founded in 2000. We are a group of fun-loving JRT owners whose purpose is to protect and promote the JRT breed by educating the public.
Adopting a Friend
Jack Russell Terriers are not for everyone! Before you make a commitment to own a JRT, we would like to more fully aquaint you with the characteristics and special nature of this breed.
Many people expect JRT's to be the perfect little angels depicted in movies and on television. This is not the case. Jack Russell Terriers are hunting dogs that are bred to follow the red fox and other quarry into the ground and bay or bark at it until the handler digs down to the dog as it faces the quarry. These terriers bear the name of Parson Jack Russell. This Englishman is credited with developing the breed more than one hundred years ago. He was renowned for his mostly white, very keen hunting dogs.
JRT's can range from 10 to 15 inches in height at the shoulder and are compactly built to follow the fox to ground. Their coats may be smooth, rough or broken (a combination of smooth and rough areas). White is the predominant color with tan, black or a combination of tan and black on the head and perhaps other areas of the body. They are known to shed their hair almost constantly.
These emotionally sensitive dogs are not tolerant of rough handling by young children even if unintentional. Since they consider themselves to be large dogs they may square off with dogs 10 times their size and are often killed in such confrontations.
JRT's are extremely intelligent and require a great deal of mental, as well as, physical stimulation. Some people underestimate the commitment required by these hardy little dogs, and as a result, many wind up in rescues such as our own. This does not mean that they are bad dogs, they're often just misunderstood. After all JRT's are first and foremost working dogs.
